Chasing a Shadow

Shadows can be scary.

When you think of what people fear the most–death, it is as though there is this looming shadow that follows us around until one day it catches up to us.  Like the grim-reaper.

But it’s just not true.

“Your eyes saw me when I was formless;
all my days were written in Your book and planned
before a single one of them began.”  Psalm 139:16

Shadows don’t have to be scary.  Just the other day I was playing with my grandbabies and I was showing them how to make shadow animals on the wall.  They had all discovered Nana’s flashlight drawer, and of course, every little hand just had to have their own flashlight.

And they needed a dark room to make them shine.  Or at least shine brighter.

And holding the light in their hands, they had absolutely no fear of the darkness–

or the shadows.

Wow. These littles had no idea that they were teaching me something about the Heavenly Father.

“The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1

It’s His shadow that we should be running to–and not from.

Especially when our days are dark or troubled.  It’s not unusual for us, in our humanity to want to run away from His shadow when we are burdened with grief or guilt.  When difficulty comes, you have two choices:  turn from God, or

RUN.TO.HIM.

Chase His shadow.  It’s there.  In the darkness it becomes even more pronounced–you just have to be willing to look for it.

If you are walking in darkness, He will shine even brighter and His shadow will be a comfort for you.

His is not a shadow to fear.

Psalm 91:4 says it this way:

“He will cover you with His feathers; you will take refuge under His wings.  His faithfulness will be a protective shield.”

That shadow isn’t so scary when you know what it is, is it?  Whether it is the day or in the darkest of nights, your Heavenly Father is faithful.

Chase His shadow.  You’ll find Him.  Waiting, willing you to dwell there.

“Lord, Your faithful love reaches to heaven,
Your faithfulness to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the highest mountains;
Your judgments, like the deepest sea.
Lord, You preserve man and beast.
God, Your faithful love is so valuable
that people take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.” Psalm 36:5-7
